Zoanthid Coral (Zoas)

Zoanthids (Zoanthus spp.) are colony polyps and the most beginner-friendly coral in the hobby. Hardy, fast-growing, and available in every conceivable color combination — named varieties like Rastas, Sunny D, and Utter Chaos command premium prices.

Care requirements

• Light: PAR 50–150 (low to moderate)
• Flow: Moderate, indirect
• Placement: Mid to upper rockwork
• Difficulty: Easy
• Toxin warning: Palytoxin — never handle without gloves and eye protection

Notes

Closed zoas usually indicate something off — check flow, lighting, or pest pressure (sundial snails, zoa-eating nudis).
